‘Aston Villa are in trouble and MUST spend to save Premier League status’, Stiliyan Petrov tells talkSPORT

first_imgFormer Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov has urged the struggling side to spend before the end of the January transfer window to save their season. The Villans currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League and a massive 11 points from safety after just two league wins in 22 games this term. The club made a number of signings in the summer window, spending over £50million on the likes of new skipper Micah Ricards, forwards Scott Sinclair, Rudy Gestede and Jordan Ayew and midfielders Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Veretout. But, after adjusting to a managerial change just ten games into the campaign, the new additions have struggled to make an impact, and ex-midfielder Petrov insists his former club are in desperate need of more quality if they are to avoid the drop.“Villa are definitely in trouble,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast. “Everybody knows that and everybody involved in the club knows that.“I think Villa should go and spend [before the window shuts]. They should try and show there fans that they will try everything they can to survive this season.“They need to buy quality to give themselves every chance to stay up, and even if they do go down they will still need good players in order to come back up to the Premier League again.“If they make a few signings in January and bring a few good players to the club, it will be a big boost for the team and for the fans. It would be great to see.“Villa have started to play much better in recent games, they have started to create chances and they have started to give themselves the opportunity to win games.“There’s still a few more weeks until the end of the window, so let’s use what they’re going to do.”last_img
