The Prop is a beautiful portable laptop stand that needs to get

first_imgLaptops allow us access to computing on the go. You could argue that smartphones and tablets do the same thing, but I’d argue both are very much limited compared to the laptop. However, choosing to work on a laptop comes with a number of compromises based on what you can easily fit alongside one in a bag.Light and thin laptops are now offered by several well-known manufacturers with Apple leading the way. You can get a wireless mouse to throw in there alongside one, and Microsoft’s Arc mouse goes a step further by lying flat for transport. There’s even a few options for carrying slim and light power packs around, and hopefully one day soon a foldaway plug too.One accessory that hasn’t been catered for yet as a portable product is the laptop stand. It may not sound like something you need to take with you, but typing for extended periods of time with your laptop keyboard at the right angle in a stand can make all the difference to your wrists, fingers, and even your posture.MAKE Collaboration has spotted a niche for creating the ultimate portable laptop stand, and their design is called the Prop. The only problem is, they need funding to produce it, so have setup a Kickstarter fund in the hopes of raising the $18,000 required for the plastic injection mold plates. There are so many tech-related Kickstarter funds now that you have to pick and choose which ones to highlight. However, just by looking at the images of the Prop (and the video below), you can tell this is a very clever and useful product worth bringing to market. It will be manufactured from a bio-degradable plastic material and takes the form of two very thin and light sections. These clip together to form a stand base that is flexible enough to hold any laptop between 13 and 17-inches in size. For transport, you just unclip them and lie them flat in your bag, and I doubt you’ll even notice their weight. So the Prop is lightweight, easy to store in your bag taking up next to no room, and the design aesthetic is such that it is probably going to make your laptop look all the better on that Starbucks table or airport lounge desk. But what about the cost?Based on the pledges being asked for through Kickstarter, the Prop is going to be super cheap to buy. Just $18 secures you one if funding is successful, and you can pick up two by pledging $34. That’s not to say this is the final pricing, but I can’t see it being far off once the manufacturing is setup and running. So far the Kickstarter drive has raised over $5,000 with it running until November 20th. Hopefully MAKE Collaboration can reach that $18,000 target and give us all the option of a very cheap and stylish portable laptop stand to throw in our bags.Read more at the Prop Kickstarter page and MAKE Collaborationlast_img
