News Photo : Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon (Abdurashid Abdulle / AFP) SomaliaAfrica Organisation March 2, 2021 Find out more February 24, 2021 Find out more February 8, 2013 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Open letter to prime minister about freedom of information reforms Help by sharing this information SomaliaAfrica to go further News Follow the news on Somalia Radio reporter gunned on city street in central Somalia Christophe Deloire Reporters Without Borders secretary-general News Receive email alerts Reporters Without Borders addressed an open letter today to Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon calling for the decriminalization of media offences and measures to protect journalists. With 18 journalists killed in 2012, Somalia is Africa’s deadliest country for media personnel and is ranked 175th out of 179 countries in the 2013 Reporters Without Borders press freedom index, down 11 places from its position in the previous year’s index. Here is the text of the letter:His Excellency Abdi Farah Shirdon Prime Minister Mogadishu, Somalia Paris, 7 February 2013 Subject: Reforms needed for freedom of information in Somalia Dear Prime Minister Shirdon, Reporters Without Borders, an international organization that defends freedom of information, would like to share with you its concerns about the actions of the Somali authorities on matters affecting journalists. The imposition of a one-year jail sentence on the journalist Abdiaziz Abdinur Ibrahim for reasons connected to his work is a disappointing sign as regards the commitment that your government gave to guarantee freedom of information. As you said, a free press is “the heart of every democracy and is guaranteed by the new constitution.” But democracy will not be able to flower if journalists are liable to be jailed in connection with their work. Media offences must be decriminalized without delay if Somalia is to enjoy freedom of information and its benefits.Last year was a particularly difficult one for Somali journalists. Somalia fell 11 places in the latest Reporters Without Borders press index and is now ranked 175th out of 179 countries. A total of 18 journalists were killed in bombings or targeted murders in 2012, making it the deadliest year in the Somali media’s history. The vulnerability of journalists is reinforced by the failure to punish those responsible for the crimes against them. No investigation has so far been conducted into any of last year’s 18 murders. As reform of the police and judicial authorities is one of your government’s announced priorities, we urge you to quickly adopt significant measures to combat this impunity and to protect journalists. The decriminalization of media offences and the protection of journalists would enable Somalia to face the human rights and development challenges ahead with the credibility that democracies derive from their ability to guarantee freedom of information. Your government’s recent statements allow us to hope that 2013 will see a renewal of human rights and media freedom in Somalia.Sincerely, RSF_en RSF and NUSOJ call for release of a journalist held in Somalia’s Puntland region News RSF requests urgent adoption of moratorium on arrests of journalists January 8, 2021 Find out more
This week’s stock market reviewThe markets proved their unpredictable nature last week when CGU, the UK’sbiggest composite insurer and Norwich Union, one of the country’s leading lifeassurance companies, were wrong-footed by the City following the announcementthat the two companies have agreed to merge. The deal, which was struck inprivate and is said to be worth about £20bn, got the thumbs down and theirstock prices were badly hit. The enlarged group is set to dominate the UK general insurance market, whichincludes home, business and motor insurance. But on the life and pensions frontit would still be behind Prudential. The new group would command about 20 percent of the general insurance market and about half that of UK life business, although, with estimated annual premium income of about £26bn, the group wouldstill be dwarfed on the European stage, ranking behind France’s AXA Group,Germany’s Allianz, Italy’s Generali and Switzerland’s Zurich. Apart from the fact that the CGU and Norwich Union deal would threaten jobs, many City analysts think it represents a bad deal for Norwich Unionshareholders. The company has been the subject of takeover speculations sinceit de-mutualised. Many analysts think its shareholders may have lost theopportunity of receiving a much higher premium had the company been taken overby a major European player instead.Dow Jones crash gives investors the jittersThe stock markets exhibited heavy volatility last week when the US Dow JonesIndustrial Average crashed below the psychologically significant 10,000 mark –its lowest point since October 1999. The cause of the sharp fall was attributedto investors’ concerns about interest rates and corporate earnings. Many tookflight from shares and pilled into bonds. But despite the markets’ weakness, the global technology sector remainedstrong. During the week the pressure from across the Atlantic had a negativeimpact on the UK market. The FTSE went roller coaster, often shedding its gainsand finishing in negative territory. Centrica has Internet project in the pipelineBritish Gas, through its subsidiary Centrica, is seriously contemplatingjoining the telecoms gravy train. Centrica, which last year bought the AA, theroadside breakdown group, has announced plans to develop a mobile Internetservice towards the end of the year. The company is setting aside about £150mfor the project. The news was well received by the City and the company’s share price rose.Centrica is also going into financial services and its first product, anIndividual Savings Account scheme, has been developed jointly with NorwichUnion. Centrica last week reported a big rise in its earnings. The jump ofnearly 90 per cent to more than £330m far exceeded analysts’ forecasts. Related posts:No related photos. Earlier today, the Big 12 announced that it had unanimously approved the re-institution of a conference championship game in 2017.The league also announced that it would likely split into a pair of five-team divisions, which drew a slew of outside criticism. What’s the point of divisions if doing round-robin? The Big 12 is clueless https://t.co/En2GE7PZ9D— Jason Brown (@JasonBrown96) June 3, 2016We decided to try and figure out how those divisions might look when they are formed. Here’s what we came up with:NorthOklahoma Oklahoma State Kansas Kansas State West VirginiaSouthTexas Texas Tech Baylor TCU Iowa StateLet’s take a look at how we arrived at these splits. First, Oklahoma and Texas will definitely be split up. Texas will likely want to be in a division with the other Texas schools, and it makes geographical sense. Meanwhile, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State fighting it out for North supremacy and a spot in the title game makes things interesting. The Kansas schools then get grouped in with the two Oklahoma programs. Iowa State makes zero sense in the South, but neither does Missouri in the SEC East. Additionally, we had to beef up the North a little bit, so we gave them West Virginia, a better program than the Cyclones. Do these divisions make sense, or should we have switched some things around? How would you have done them?
reddit most popular football teamThe folks over at Reddit often put together some pretty cool maps that show college football fandom across the country. But the latest graphic will leave you scratching your head just a bit.The below photo shows the most popular college football team that plays in each state. The problem? Anyone could vote – not just people who live in that state. As a result, we have UAB beating out both Alabama and Auburn as the most popular team in the state of Alabama. And Georgia Tech beating out Georgia in Georgia. Check it out: We’re not sure what we learned here – but we’re ready for college football season nonetheless.
Joshua McMillon, a redshirt freshman linebacker, will not be leaving Alabama despite a report that he will transfer, he says.McMillon, who is originally from Memphis, Tennessee, took to Twitter to shoot down a story that appeared on Touchdown Alabama on Saturday, saying that he will leave the Crimson Tide. The linebacker says that he is “a member of the Crimson Tide for life.”McMillon protected his Twitter account shortly after sending the tweet. From the original story, written by Stephen M. Smith:Alabama will lose a sixth player from its 2015 recruiting class to a transfer, as redshirt freshman Joshua McMillon takes his leave from the program. A source confirmed to Touchdown Alabama Magazine with the news, on the heels of him missing the last two days of fall practice.According to those who saw his other tweets before he locked his Twitter account, McMillon missed the pair of Crimson Tide practices to attend a funeral for his uncle. The report about Joshua McMillon transferring is inaccurate. He was out of town following a death in the family— Matt Zenitz (@mzenitz) August 28, 2016Smith has since apologized for the error. My dearest apologies to UA linebacker Joshua McMillon and his family. He’s not transferring. It was a mistake on my end. Won’t happen again.— Stephen M. Smith (@Smsmith_TDALMag) August 28, 2016McMillon redshirted last season, after starring at Whitehaven High School. He was a four-star recruit, per 247Sports, which ranked him No. 16 among all outside linebackers in the 2015 class, and No. 9 in the state of Tennessee that year.We will update if there are any changes in this story, but it certainly sounds like McMillon is not going anywhere.

BEIJING, China – China plans to buy 184 Airbus A320 jetliners, French President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday, in a diplomatic tradition aimed at defusing trade complaints.Chinese President Xi Jinping said his government “will preserve parity” in market share between Airbus and its U.S. rival, Boeing, said Macron at a news conference.China often times announcements of purchases of aircraft and other big-ticket items to coincide with visits by foreign leaders in an effort to defuse trade tensions.Macron said details have yet to be completed and he gave no financial figures. At the list price for A320s, the order could total $18 billion, but large buyers often get deep discounts.“China will preserve its volume of purchases in the future and will preserve parity in market share between Airbus and Boeing,” Macron said.
SHORT HILLS, N.J. — A growing number of brands born on the internet, from Casper to Indochino, are opening physical stores and moving into suburban malls once considered doomed as more Americans shop online.Digital natives are discovering that it’s become more expensive to acquire customers through banner ads and email giveaways. At the same time, opening a store has become more affordable as mall vacancies force landlords to offer flexible leases and other perks. Jim Ward, who heads up recruiting for online brands for mall owner CBL, says it can be 10 times as expensive to acquire a new customer online as it is in a store.Store openings are a major shift for once online-only brands that until recently believed they didn’t need a physical presence to generate robust sales growth.Anne D’Innocenzio, The Associated Press
Kolkata: Researchers at IIT Kharagpur have developed a smartphone-based application to detect counterfeit currency and also provided solutions for industrial operations ranging from thermal power plants to nuclear radiation tracking, an official said. A group of six students from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering developed the code for a smartphone application to detecting counterfeit currency. The image processing application which can detect counterfeit currency, can be installed on smartphones and thus used by people at various points to reduce the chances of fraud, a statement said. Also Read – Centuries-old Durga Pujas continue to be hit among revellers”A user can upload a currency note image and the mobile app would verify its authenticity using 25 features extracted from the front and rear side of the currency note. In case of detection of a fake note, the user will also be notified…,” TYSS Santosh, the research leader, said. To address the issue of occupational hazard for people working in the domain of a nuclear-powered device, students were asked to develop a solution for visualising and localising a 3D radiation source along with its size, shape and orientation, given the data on spatial dosage. The 6-member student team proposed a solution based on Boltzmann Transport Equations dealing with the flow of heat in fluids from hotter regions to colder ones. The students solved the reverse Boltzmann Transport Equations using the dataset for a given area to estimate the source location. “This solution is well-suited to occupational workers carrying wearable sensors detecting radiation dose data.”
Ohio State football added another chapter to its own history Sunday evening with the announcement that seniors Garrett Goebel, John Simon, Etienne Sabino, Jordan Hall and Zach Boren will captain the 2012 Buckeyes. Goebel, Simon, Sabino, Hall and Boren were chosen by their peers to lead first-year OSU coach Urban Meyer’s squad, which learned Saturday that it is ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press’ first Top 25 poll of the season. “Announcing who are team captains is one of the great honors I get to do as head coach,” Meyer said in an OSU athletics Sunday release. “We had a number of guys get votes. This is a really good group of seniors who I am very proud to have leading this team.” Simon, co-captain of former head coach and current defensive coordinator Luke Fickell’s 2011 Buckeyes, becomes just the seventh two-time captain in OSU history. Being named captain meant a lot, Simon said the athletic department release. “I appreciate the votes of the players. This is one of the biggest honors a player can receive and I’ll be proud to lead this team along with four other great guys,” Simon said. “We’ll have a really good season if we all lead well.” Simon (defensive lineman) Boren (fullback) and Sabino (linebacker) all joined Meyer in Chicago for Big Ten Media Days – the three players have been visible at media events. Hall, a senior running back, joins the captain quintet despite surgery for a torn ligament in his foot after stepping on glass while walking his pit bull dog, “Cali.” Hall could miss up to three games at the outset of OSU’s non-conference schedule. Hall said his selection for the captaincy is a dream come true. “I was hoping to be named a captain but I was also a little surprised when it happened,” Hall said. “I can’t thank my teammates enough for selecting me for this honor.” Goebel, a redshirt senior defensive lineman with five career starts to his name, said that he too is honored by his selection as captain. “I’m excited. It is an honor that your teammates think that highly of you to name you a captain,” Goebel said. “I’m going to put everything I have into this responsibility.” OSU’s five new captains will lead the team into competition for the Buckeyes’ first game this year Sept. 1 at Ohio Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon.
Ohio State freshman forward Dorka Juhasz shoots a jumper in practice. Credit: Daniel McNatt | Lantern ReporterThe Ohio State women’s basketball team traveled to Seattle and was handed its third loss of the season, falling to Washington 69-59 on Wednesday night.Washington junior guard Amber Melgoza led the team with 28 points on 50 percent shooting from the field, one point short of her season high. Melgoza connected on each of her eight free throw attempts in Wednesday’s win, recording six in the first half. “She’s a great player,” Ohio State head coach Kevin McGuff said. “Every time we made a mistake against her she made us pay. You can’t do that against somebody as good as her.”Washington was up by as many as 10 points in the first half despite shooting a worse field goal percentage than Ohio State, 35 percent to 43 percent respectively and left at halftime with a six-point lead. Despite shooting 41.67 percent from the field in the second half, outscoring Washington 37-33, the Buckeyes could not overcome the first half deficit, connecting on 21.1 percent of 3-point shots, including one of nine in the first half. One of the main problems that has consistently plagued Ohio State this season was a factor against the Huskies, turning the ball over a season-high 21 times, killing the momentum on numerous occasions. Ohio State redshirt senior guard Najah Queenland scored eight points off the bench, making four of her five attempts from the field. Freshman forward Dorka Juhasz scored 11 points, but failed to reach a double-double in the game for just the second time this season, finishing with six rebounds. Redshirt senior forward Makayla Waterman also scored 11 points and notched seven rebounds but recorded four turnovers, tied for the team lead with redshirt senior guard Carmen Grande. Waterman said one of the main focuses going into the game was communication and said it was something that was lacking during the loss to the Huskies. “Just from the beginning of the game we weren’t talking, we weren’t communicating, we just weren’t really ready,” Waterman said. “There’s too many fifth years on the team to be like that. I think coach McGuff really tried to emphasize communicating with each other and we weren’t doing that and I think that’s what lead to a lot of our turnovers.”Ohio State will be back in Columbus on Dec. 16 to face the Florida Gators at 1 p.m. Updated at 11 a.m. with quotes from Kevin McGuff and Makayla Waterman.
Manuel Neuer’s participation in this summer’s World Cup has been put into further doubt after it was confirmed that he will not play in Bayern Munich’s final Bundesliga game, reports Chicago TribuneThe German goalkeeper has missed most of Bayern’s campaign due to a hairline fracture in his left foot with his last appearance for the Bavarians coming back in September.Neuer sustained the injury during a club training session and is now running out of time to prove to Germany boss Joachim Loew his fitness for the upcoming World Cup this summer.Outgoing Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes confirmed on Wednesday that the German captain will not be included for the final league game against Stuttgart, but denied he had ruled out Neuer for their German Cup final clash against Eintracht Frankfurt on May 19.Report: Bayern are held by Leipzig George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Bayern Munich was held to another draw, this time by RB Leipzig.Bayern Munich finds themselves in the unfamiliar position of sitting third in the…“I didn’t say that.
